Tax-Free Childcare: A Guide for Parents
What is Tax-Free Childcare?
Tax-Free Childcare (TFC) is a government scheme that helps working families pay for childcare. For every £8 you pay into your childcare account, the government adds £2 — up to £500 per child per quarter (£2,000 per year).
For children with additional needs, the top-up is up to £1,000 per quarter (£4,000 per year).
You can use it to pay for eligible childcare, including nurseries, pre-schools, after-school clubs, and holiday schemes.
Who Can Use It?
You may be eligible if:
-
You (and your partner, if applicable) work at least 16 hours/week at or above the National Minimum or Living Wage.
-
Each earns under £100,000 per year.
-
Your child is under 12 (or under 17 if disabled) and lives with you.
Note: You cannot use TFC alongside childcare vouchers or Universal Credit childcare support.
How It Works
-
Set up an online account at GOV.UK and link your nursery.
-
Top up your account — for every £8 you pay, the government adds £2.
-
Pay your nursery directly from the account during term-time.
-
Reconfirm eligibility every 3 months to continue receiving top-ups.
Benefits for Parents
-
Reduces nursery fees through government contributions.
-
Can be used alongside the 15 or 30 hours free childcare scheme.
-
Secure, simple, and helps plan childcare costs term-time.
